Our History
The Women’s Impact Fund has experienced impressive growth since its inception in 2003. What began as a special initiative of the Foundation for the Carolinas has grown into an influential nonprofit organization with more than 1,000 women having been members over time. Inspired by an article about women philanthropists in Seattle, our founders, Claire Tate and Mary Lou Babb, established a women’s giving organization in Charlotte, North Carolina in November of 2003.

Our 20th Anniversary
Women’s Impact Fund was founded in November of 2003, with the first grants were awarded in the spring of 2004. We will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Women’s Impact Fund throughout the 2023-2024 program year, culminating in our 2024 Annual Meeting where we will surpass $8 million in grants given to our community over 20 years. All are welcome to celebrate this milestone with us!
Since then, the Women’s Impact Fund has made a significant impact. The collective gifts of our members have made it possible to award grants in various areas of need in the community. In 2004, we awarded our first grants totaling $158,000. Over time, the number of members and the number of grants have continued to increase. To date, they have awarded almost $8 million in 100 grants to 96 unique nonprofit organizations in Mecklenburg County.
The Women’s Impact Fund has proven to be a leader in philanthropy and women’s engagement in the region. In addition to our grantmaking, we host education and engagement events, bringing together members and the community on important local topics. We welcome all interested women to join us as we continue to grow and expand our collective impact.
