Throughout the summer, we will be featuring some of the new members of the Board for 2023-2024 to introduce you to the new faces and names. For the month of July, meet Karen Barton, our Community Impact Vice Chair.

Can you provide a brief background on yourself for those who do not know you?

Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, and living in Charlotte for 27 years, I feel like a native by now. My husband and I met in architecture school at Auburn University (War Eagle!). We opted to settle in Charlotte to be a part of a growing, vibrant city. Together we have two children in college and continue to practice architecture.

What makes Women’s Impact Fund’s purpose or mission meaningful to you?

Learning about the various nonprofits in Charlotte has given me a new understanding of our city; where the needs are and my contribution is helping our community. The process of collective giving and having a voice in the process with one woman, one vote further makes the mission of WIF important to me.

What energizes or motivates you?

My energy is fueled by my friends who are the best motivators.  They push me to lead, and I am thankful for these nudges!

What are you the most excited about for the upcoming year?

  1. Co-chairing the Community Impact Committee with Susan Adams.  Susan motivates me to step up, and she’s just a fun person!
  2. Making new friends. Meeting new committee members has introduced me to my very best friends.
  3. Learning how to better serve our nonprofit partners and truly be a resource for them.

What advice do you have for members to make the most out of their WIF membership?
