Member Spotlight: Kimberly Perry
By Kate Jostworth
Kimberly’s purpose ‘to do good ‘while you can is evident in her volunteer commitments with many groups in our community. Kimberly joined WIF in 2021 and can be found serving on the Human Services Grant committee. Let’s get to know Kimberly Perry!
Can you provide a brief background on yourself? I am a native Charlotteann; though my parents later moved to Maryland where I attended junior high and high school. I am an alum of the University of Maryland at College Park and the Georgetown Law Center. I have practiced intellectual property as a Trademark Attorney with the US Patent & Trademark Office for over 20 years. My husband and I relocated to Charlotte from Maryland in 2014. We currently have two adult children; Nicholas, a teacher in Chicago, and Elisabeth, a social worker in New York City.
What makes our mission meaningful to you? As an empty nester, I was motivated to get reacquainted with Charlotte through a familiar mission – volunteering. I am particularly passionate about children’s literacy and spent years as a literary tutor (going virtual during the pandemic). I currently serve as a board member for Freedom Schools Charlotte; a nonprofit that provides summer programming to prevent reading loss for under-resourced students. I also spend time volunteering with other nonprofits serving children through Junior League-Charlotte. I was naturally drawn to WIF because I loved the idea of women leading and making a difference in Charlotte through the power of collective giving. Through the Women LEAD series, I learned more about the social issues facing our community and the impact the collective gifts our members have made.
What energizes or motivates you? I have always been energized by Aurelius’ famous quote (paraphrased): No one will live forever; so, while you live and while you can – do good.
What are you the most excited about for the 20th anniversary year? I am excited to serve on the Human Services grants committee this year. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, I would strongly encourage members to drop into socials and/or lunch and learn opportunities to engage with likeminded women who share their passion for transforming the lives of our under-resourced neighbors.
What is your favorite restaurant or activity in Charlotte? I am partial to small places offering vegan dining options such as Kid Cashew and Fern in Dilworth. I am a walker and particularly love to spend time walking in Freedom Park and Briar Creek Greenway. Charlotte has some great greenways for walking and enjoying nature; one of my greatest pleasures of returning to the city of trees!
